About The Barn at Heiner Ranch

Long before The Barn at Heiner Ranch became a wedding venue, it was a working dairy barn built in 1928 by R.C. Heiner, the current owner’s great-grandfather. After generations of family history on the ranch, the barn was beautifully renovated in 2025 in a way that preserved its original character while creating a space for weddings today.

It’s such a special option whether you’re planning a local wedding in Star Valley or a destination wedding in Wyoming. Inside the barn, you get the history, weathered wood, and natural light. Outside, you have open fields, rolling hills, mountain views, and horses. After photographing weddings here myself, I loved how much variety the ranch gave us while still feeling completely rooted in the Wyoming landscape!

Wedding Spaces at The Barn at Heiner Ranch

One of the things I loved about photographing a Barn at Heiner Ranch wedding was how easily the day moves through different parts of the property. You can get ready inside the historic barn, choose between several ceremony experiences, and come back together for cocktails, dinner, and dancing while staying immersed in the ranch all day.

Getting Ready in the Private Bridal Suite

The Barn at Heiner Ranch has a private bridal suite right inside the barn. It’s such a comfortable place to spend the morning before everything begins. It’s spacious and filled with natural light, which also makes it a beautiful setting for those slower getting-ready moments and photos before the ceremony.

At this time, the barn has a dedicated private bridal suite but does not have a separate groom’s suite. The venue does have plans to add another getting-ready space in the future.

First Looks Around the Historic Barn

For the wedding I photographed here, we stayed around the historic barn for the couple’s first look before heading into the hills. I loved having the weathered wood and history of the barn around us while still being just steps away from the open Wyoming landscape. It gave us a completely different feel from the portraits we would create later in the day.

Ceremony Options at The Barn at Heiner Ranch

One of the best parts about getting married here is that you aren’t limited to one ceremony setup. Couples can choose from the Barn Hayloft, The Grove, The Hay Meadow, or the Hilltop, depending on the kind of experience and scenery they want.

Ceremony in the Barn: If you want an indoor ceremony, the upper level of the barn has weathered wood, exposed rafters, and the feeling of a warm historic space around you. Afterward, guests can head downstairs for drinks or cocktail hour before returning upstairs for the reception.

Outdoor Ceremony on the Ranch: The Grove and Hay Meadow give you outdoor ceremony options while keeping you closer to the main ranch and barn. The Hay Meadow has wide-open views of the surrounding ranchland and mountain peaks, while The Grove has a more tucked-away setting.

Ceremony on the Hilltop: For couples who want to fully embrace the Wyoming setting, the Hilltop experience is incredible! It can accommodate up to 60 guests and is only accessible by horse-drawn wagon, with the ride taking about 30 minutes. The couple can arrive separately by carriage, and once you’re there, the views stretch in every direction with mountains, rolling hills, farmland, open valley skies, and horses throughout the landscape.

This is the option the couple chose for the wedding I photographed. Guests spent time around the herd while they waited, and cowboys rounded up the horses just in time for them to run behind the ceremony during the couple’s first kiss. It was dreamy, dramatic, wild, and one of those moments you could never recreate exactly the same way twice.

The Hilltop is generally unavailable during April and early May, but winter weddings can still take place there with transportation by horse-drawn sleigh.

Cocktail Hour in the Former Milking Parlor

After the ceremony, guests can gather on the lower level of the barn, where the ranch’s original milking parlor has been transformed into a space for drinks, snacks, and mingling. There’s also a gas fireplace downstairs, which is really nice when Wyoming temperatures start to cool down.

Dinner & Dancing in the Upstairs Barn Loft

The upper level of the historic barn can transition into the reception space for dinner and dancing under the original timber beams and barn lighting. The loft has radiant heat for comfort, and the venue also provides tables and chairs along with a prep kitchen for catering. It’s such a cozy change from the huge, open landscapes you experience earlier in the day.

Best Wedding Photo Locations at The Barn at Heiner Ranch

As a Wyoming wedding photographer, this place really is a playground! I just love the historic barn to the huge open landscapes, horses, and rolling hills. It gives your gallery so much depth without ever losing that wild western feeling.

Inside & Around the Historic Barn

The barn is perfect for getting-ready photos, first looks, and portraits. I love the weathered wood, original details, and natural light inside, especially as a contrast to the wide-open scenery outside.

The Hillside

The hillside is one of the most beautiful places on the property. You get sweeping views of the valley, mountains, farmland, and huge Wyoming skies. It’s such a beautiful spot for both ceremony photos and portraits afterward.

Portraits With the Horses

Being able to photograph couples around the herd is one of the things that makes a Barn at Heiner Ranch wedding so unique. After the ceremony I photographed here, we spent time taking portraits among the horses, which created some of my favorite images from the entire day. There was so much movement and unpredictability, and that made everything feel even more cinematic!

The Carriage & Ranch Roads

The carriage adds even more to the story of the day and creates such a fun opportunity for photos that feel connected to the experience. Instead of posing beside something just because it looks pretty, you’re documenting a real part of how you moved through the ranch.

Open Fields & Golden Hour

The open fields give us room to move around and let the landscape do its thing. Toward the end of the day, the softer light across the hills and fields are so dreamy and romantic. It’s the perfect time to sneak away for a few more portraits together.

I also had the chance to document this wedding on video, which made it possible to capture even more of the atmosphere of the ranch throughout the day. This film gives you such a good feel for what a wedding at The Barn at Heiner Ranch can actually look like!

What’s Included With a Wedding at The Barn at Heiner Ranch?

Another thing that makes planning a wedding at The Barn at Heiner Ranch a little easier is that several of the essentials are already available on-site. Exact inclusions depend on the package you choose, but the barn itself comes with quite a bit to work with.

Current Venue Amenities

  • Tables and chairs for up to 100 guests

  • Access to the barn and surrounding grassy areas

  • Private bridal suite

  • Prep kitchen and restrooms

  • Large hayloft with vaulted ceilings

  • Double staircase and open lower level for cocktails or dancing

  • Standard barn lighting

  • Radiant heat in the upstairs loft

  • Gas fireplace on the lower level

  • On-site parking

  • Indoor and outdoor ceremony options

A few things couples should plan to bring in separately are decorations, table coverings, and a sound system. Depending on your package, outdoor ceremony seating, horses, carriage transportation, and other ranch experiences may also be included or available as add-ons.

I really love the indoor and outdoor flexibility here. Wyoming weather can have a mind of its own, so having the barn available while still being able to build so much of your day around the surrounding landscape gives you options without losing what makes the ranch special.

*Inclusions and amenities can change, so always confirm what is included in your specific wedding package directly with The Barn at Heiner Ranch.

Wedding Package Options at The Barn at Heiner Ranch

At Heiner Ranch, you can choose how much of the ranch experience you want to build into your wedding day. Whether you’re dreaming of a day centered around the historic barn, a ceremony out in the Wyoming landscape, or the full horses-and-carriage experience, there are a few different ways to make it your own.

The Barn: This option includes access to the historic barn and surrounding grassy areas, along with the private bridal suite, prep kitchen, restrooms, hayloft, lower-level gathering space, and tables and chairs for up to 100 guests.

The Barn & Ranch: You’ll get everything included with The Barn, plus your choice of ceremony location at The Grove, Barn Hayloft, or Hay Meadow. Hay bale seating is also available for your ceremony.

The Barn, Ranch & Horses: If you’re picturing the full western experience, this option includes a Hilltop ceremony for up to 60 guests, horse-drawn wagon transportation for guests, and a carriage arrival for the couple.

Ranch Elopement: For something smaller, couples can choose the Hilltop, Grove, or Hay Meadow for an intimate ceremony with up to 20 guests. Horse-drawn wagon transportation is included, and barn or bridal suite access can be added if you want a little more space for the day.

Backcountry Elopement: If you want to take things even farther into the mountains, Heiner Ranch also offers a June-only backcountry experience in Bridger-Teton National Forest for up to 15 guests. There’s even an option to turn it into an overnight adventure with a guided horseback ride.

You can also add experiences like trail rides, fly fishing, Salt River float trips, glamping, UTV adventures, and guided hiking or wildlife tours if you want your wedding to feel like an entire Wyoming weekend instead of just one day.

The Heiner Ranch House & Wedding Lodging

If you’re planning a destination wedding at The Barn at Heiner Ranch, there’s also a The Heiner Ranch House close by to the historic barn. It has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms, two living rooms, a full kitchen, washer and dryer, fireplace, Wi-Fi, and plenty of free parking. It’s such a convenient home base for your wedding party, family, or a group of guests who want to stay close to everything!

The location also gives your guests a chance to make a whole weekend out of their time in Star Valley. The Ranch House is about three miles from Bridger-Teton National Forest, with hiking and horseback riding nearby, while golfing and swimming at Star Valley Ranch are around a 7–10 minute drive away. And if you want to plan even more while everyone is in town, keep reading for some of the wedding weekend activities available through Heiner Ranch, from trail rides to float trips and guided adventures. The Ranch House is booked separately, so I recommend checking availability early if having your people stay close to the venue is important to you. You can learn more about the Heiner Ranch House on the venue’s website, or view the current Airbnb listing for availability, photos, and booking details.

Wedding Weekend Activities at Heiner Ranch

If you’re turning your wedding into a full weekend in Wyoming, Heiner Ranch gives you plenty of ways to make the most of it. Through Heiner Ranch and Jackson Hole Outfitters, couples and guests can add experiences like trail rides, backcountry fly fishing, Salt River float trips, glamping, UTV adventures, and guided hiking or wildlife tours.

I love this for destination weddings because it gives everyone a chance to actually experience Star Valley instead of flying in for one day and heading home. You could plan a trail ride before the wedding, a float trip with friends, or a more relaxed adventure the day after and turn the whole weekend into something your people will remember right along with the wedding itself.

*Additional activities are booked separately and priced individually through Heiner Ranch and Jackson Hole Outfitters.

Getting to The Barn at Heiner Ranch

The Barn at Heiner Ranch is located in Thayne, Wyoming, in the heart of Star Valley. While the ranch feels tucked into the Wyoming landscape, it’s still very accessible for destination weddings and out-of-town guests. Jackson Hole is about an hour away, and Idaho Falls is around a 1 hour and 45 minute drive. This gives guests multiple options when choosing where to fly in.

If you’re bringing guests in from out of town, I’d recommend encouraging them to arrange a rental car or transportation ahead of time and leave a little flexibility in their travel plans. Mountain weather and road conditions can change throughout the year, and part of the beauty of getting married in Star Valley is that you really are surrounded by wide-open Wyoming once you arrive!

Best Time of Year to Get Married at The Barn at Heiner Ranch

There really isn’t one “best” season for a Barn at Heiner Ranch wedding. It depends on what you want the landscape and the whole experience to feel like. The venue’s peak season runs from May 15 through September 15, which is when the ranch is especially active and the outdoor ceremony spaces are at their best.

During peak season, there are typically around 20–30 horses on the ranch, although some may be away doing trail work. The Hilltop usually isn’t accessible during April and early May, but winter weddings are still possible, and honestly, arriving by horse-drawn sleigh sounds pretty magical.

No matter when you get married here, I’d leave a little room in the timeline for changing temperatures and whatever Wyoming decides to do that day. One of my favorite things about Heiner Ranch is that you get all of that open landscape outside, while still having the historic barn ready if the weather shifts.

The Barn at Heiner Ranch Wedding Cost & Packages

Wedding pricing at The Barn at Heiner Ranch depends on the kind of experience you’re planning. There are several wedding packages. Whether your day will be centered around the barn, a Hilltop ceremony, horses and carriage rides, or something smaller and more intimate. Since every option looks different, I’d recommend reaching out to the Heiner Ranch team directly for current pricing and availability.

It helps to have a general idea of what parts of the ranch experience matter most to you before you inquire. That way, they can help you figure out which package makes the most sense for the day you’re imagining.

Planning a Wedding at The Barn at Heiner Ranch

There’s so much freedom to make a wedding here feel like your own, but a few ranch specific details are really helpful to know before you start building your timeline and vendor team.

Give yourself plenty of time for the Hilltop. The Hilltop ceremony location is about a 30-minute ride from the barn and is only accessible by horse-drawn wagon. If you’re planning to get married there, that travel time needs to be built into your wedding day for both you and your guests.

You can choose your own vendors. Heiner Ranch is a venue-only property, so you’re able to bring in the wedding team that feels right for you. Vendors do need to carry insurance, and the ranch also has preferred vendors who are already familiar with the property.

Plan ahead if you’re serving alcohol. Alcohol is allowed, but it must be served by a licensed, pre-approved bartender.

Know what you’re responsible for at the end of the night. Couples are responsible for setting up and taking down their own decorations, along with cleanup afterward, including sweeping the floors. Your guests need to leave by the venue’s 10:00 PM curfew, although vendors and helpers can stay afterward to finish cleanup.

Build in a little flexibility. Between the horses, outdoor ceremony spaces, wagon transportation, and Wyoming weather, this is a venue where a little breathing room in your timeline goes a long way. The barn is always available as an indoor ceremony option if the weather decides not to cooperate.

Keep accessibility in mind when choosing your spaces. The barn has two sets of stairs, and the upstairs hayloft is not wheelchair accessible. If accessibility is important for you or any of your guests, I’d talk through the different ceremony and reception options with the venue before finalizing your layout.

Remember that this is a real working ranch. Part of what makes Heiner Ranch so special is that it isn’t a staged version of ranch life. You’ll see horses, corrals, equipment, and older ranch structures throughout the property. Because livestock are present, pets aren’t allowed, although service animals are welcome. Guests should also plan to use the designated on-site parking and not park along the road.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings at The Barn at Heiner Ranch

The Barn at Heiner Ranch is one of those venues that gives me so much to work with while still letting the day feel completely natural. I loved being able to move from the historic barn to the hillside, horses, open fields, and all that beautiful Wyoming scenery.

What stood out to me most was the unpredictability of it all (but in the best way). Horses running behind the ceremony, portraits among the herd, carriage rides through the ranch, and those little moments inside the barn all gave the gallery so much life. It felt dreamy, cinematic, wild, and still very personal to the couple.
