3 Tips for Photographing at Pink Lake Utah

I've had the Pink Lake and Spiral Jetty on my bucket list for photos for a long time. It has never completely worked out because it's been difficult to find 1. Find a client who is willing to make the risk to take photos there and 2. figure out the logistics. Not much information is available for shoots so here is what we learned:

1. Be ready to drive. If you survive the Utah County, SLC and Davis County Traffic (IYKYK), you’re only at the beginning of your trip. A round trip from Provo was a little over 5 hours. Once you hit Brigham City you can expect to drive an additional hour. The last 15 miles will be on a rough dirt road so plan accordingly. The cell service isn’t great so it’s not a place you’d want to break down. 

2. We visited in Early April while temperatures are cool. If you’ve ever visited Antelope Island in the Summer, you know that bugs are EVERYWHERE when it warms up. I’m talking biting gnats, giant mosquitoes, and huge spiders. After some research, I learned that they hang out mostly around the brush/scrub but taper offer the closer to the water you get. Regardless bring bug spray. The Pink Lake is one of the saltiest lakes in the world, nearly 10x saltier than the ocean. Salt loving microorganisms give the lake it’s pink color. I had my doubt about the color but it is PINK. Imagine a lake filled with raspberry lemondae. That’s it.  While the microorganisms are not dangerous, the salt can make your skin very itchy. Bring fresh water and wet wipes to rinse off your feet. A good lotion also prevents drying. 

3. During April we had to walk between .5 and 1 mile from the parking lot to the lake. It gives you the chance to check out the stunning Spiral Jetty. Due to the drought, you can expect to walk even further in warmer months. Once you make it to the shore, it’s definitely worth kicking off your shoes and wading through the luke warm water. I hired a drone videographer to capture footage for my client and I 10/10 recommend hiring someone or bringing a drone for aerial footage. The pink shoreline is unmatched. It’s incredible, but be prepared to walk across the barren salt flat.
